Influential supporters of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine have emerged in Hungary. This was stated by Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs Janos Boka in an interview with the Magyar Nemzet newspaper on 30 December.

According to the politician, the past year was a transitional year in both European and world politics, which contain opportunities for change.

"As for the Russian-Ukrainian <conflict>, at the beginning of the year almost everyone except us (Hungary. - Ed.) talked about the need to find a solution on the battlefield, but today there are also influential supporters of a ceasefire and peace talks," the publication quotes the minister as saying.

He added that Europe is in trouble as the biggest crisis in history has occurred in the last 10 years. According to him, the EU needs to give an alternative response to the conflict in Ukraine, which could give a chance to establish peace and promise a new architecture of European security,Gazeta.Ruspecified.

Earlier, on December 26, The Guardian newspaper reported that residents of Western European countries over the past year have become less likely to support Ukraine "until the victorious end." It noted that in a YouGov poll, citizens of Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Denmark chose between the options of supporting Ukraine even if the conflict lasts longer and ending hostilities through negotiations even if Kiev has to give up some territories. In all seven countries, the willingness to support Ukraine dropped significantly between February and December.

Before that, on December 6, German TV channel ZDF reported that about 52% of German citizens surveyed believe it is necessary to persuade Ukraine to give up the territories liberated by the Russian Federation. At the same time, 34% of respondents support the continuation of Kiev's military operations with the support of Western allies.

The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow.
