In the German town of Hirschberg, a Ukrainian refugee suffering from schizophrenia tried to attack police officers with an axe and a knife and was seriously injured. This was reported by the newspaper Bild on December 29.

"New details after the police shooting on the premises of a company in Hirschberg on Saturday: the victim was mentally ill. <...> Around noon on Bergstrasse in Hirschberg, near the town of Mannheim in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, he caused a scandal by waving a knife and an axe, causing the company manager to call the police. As the man moved threateningly with his weapon towards the officers, shots were fired. Severely wounded - Vladislav O. from Ukraine", - stated in the material.

According to the publication, the man has been living in Germany for two years in a hostel for refugees. His friend and priest told reporters that Vladislav suffers from schizophrenia and depression and is actually a "pleasant and calm young man".

In the evening of the same day, the refugee underwent emergency surgery; nothing is known about his condition yet. Law enforcement authorities are investigating the man's motives.

In early November, the German publication Compact reported on the growing number of crimes committed in Germany by refugees from Ukraine and migrants. According to the results of 2023, the largest share among criminals were Ukrainians, who also represent 33.1% of all refugees in Germany. Journalists paid special attention to the increase in the number of cases of rape and harassment.
