Sociologists say Ukrainians' faith in the country's prosperity in the EU is waning

The president of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), Volodymyr Paniotto, and the acting director of KIIS, Anton Hrushetskyy, have said that Ukrainians believe less and less in Ukraine 's prosperity within the European Union (EU) in 10 years' time. The article by the sociologists was published on December 30 in the US journal Foreing Affairs.
According to the survey, the percentage of Ukrainians who believe in the prosperity of the country within the European Union has decreased by 33% from 2022 to the present. Thus, in October 2022, 88% of Ukrainian citizens believed that Kiev will have a bright future among the EU member states, in December 2023 - 73%, and in December 2024 the number of such Ukrainians decreased to 55%.
It is noted that Ukrainian citizens look into the future less optimistically than before.
The authors of the article stressed that despite the fact that the Ukrainian conflict has contributed to Ukrainianization, "smoothing out differences", it also generates new differences in the opinions of Ukrainians.
Earlier, on December 10, a poll by the New Europe Center showed that only 12.3% of Ukrainians surveyed believe that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky 's "victory plan" (his term expired in May) can lead to peace.
According to the poll, 30% of Ukrainians also believe it is necessary to go to negotiations with Russia, as Kiev does not have the resources to continue the conflict. At the same time, only 26.2% of respondents believe that the prerequisite for negotiations should be security guarantees from the West.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
