The current U.S. President Joe Biden declared January 9, 2025 a day of national mourning because of the death of former U.S. leader Jimmy Carter. This was announced on December 30 by the press service of the White House.

"I designate January 9, 2025 as a national day of mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to gather on this day in their respective places of worship to pay tribute to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.", - stated in a message on the site.

Biden also ordered US flags to be lowered for 30 days as a sign of national mourning. This applies to all government buildings, military facilities, U.S. ships in the country and abroad.

Earlier in the day it became known that former US President Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 years. Carter entered home hospice care in February 2023 in Plains, Georgia, after a series of brief hospitalizations.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President (1977-1981) of the Democratic Party, became the first White House chief of staff to reach the age of 100. For his work as president and leader of the Carter Center, he received the Nobel Prize, the United Nations Human Rights Award, and numerous other significant awards from countries, organizations, and world leaders. In addition, Carter and his wife Rosalynn were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President (1993-2001) Bill Clinton.
