A day after a plane crash in South Korea, a Jeju Air airliner had to make an emergency landing due to a landing gear malfunction. This was reported by Yonhap on December 30.

"One day after the Jeju Air airplane crash that occurred at Muang International Airport in Jeolla-namdo, the same Jeju Air model (Boeing 737. - Ed.) failed to operate normally due to the same defect," the agency informed.

Jeju Air Flight 7C101, bound for Jeju and departing from Gimpo Airport, had a landing gear malfunction immediately after takeoff, the airline said. The plane changed its flight and will land at the departure airport.

"The return was a necessary measure for safe operation. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to passengers," a Jeju Air spokesperson commented.

The crash of the Jeju Air plane while landing at Muang Airport was reported earlier in the day. Authorities are investigating the scene to determine the exact cause of the crash, and rescue operations are also underway. According to the airport authority, the plane crashed on landing on the fuselage due to a landing gear failure before it could shed speed. There were 181 people on board the airliner: 175 passengers (173 South Korean citizens, two from Thailand) and six crew members, two of whom survived. The bodies of all 179 dead have been recovered.

South Korean authorities have retrieved the black boxes from the plane. A flight recorder and a sound recording device have been recovered. The country has declared seven days of national mourning in connection with the crash.
