In South Korea, experts have named the probable causes of the plane crash

The Republic of Korea said that the main reasons for the crash of the Jeju Air airplane at Muang International Airport may be both the collision of the airliner with a flock of birds and the insufficient length of the runway for an emergency landing. The Yonhap news agency wrote on Dec. 29.
"The airplane has several brakes. If the landing gear fails, the reversing engines raise the flaps, which act as air brakes. But in this case, they don't seem to have worked," said Prof. Choi Ki-young of Inha University in Incheon.
Experts believe that the crash could have occurred due to technical malfunctions in the airplane. According to experts, a single collision with birds could not have led to the crash, as it is not enough for the failure of several systems in the airliner at once, the publication noted.
The agency, quoting interviewed analysts, said that hitting the airplane's engines with birds could have triggered a chain reaction, resulting in the failure of the engines and the hydraulic system of the landing gear.
The Boeing 737 is known to have signaled a distress call minutes after the plane's air traffic controllers warned of a possible collision with a flock of birds. While trying to make an emergency landing, the plane crashed into the airport fence wall because it failed to make a full braking.
Nevertheless, not all experts are sure that the collision with the birds could hardly cause the failure of two power units at once. With one engine running, the airplane should have landed safely.
The crash of the Jeju Air plane while landing at Muang Airport became known earlier in the day. Authorities are investigating the scene to determine the exact cause of the crash, and rescue operations are also underway. According to the airport authority, the plane crashed on landing on the fuselage due to a landing gear failure before it could shed speed. The airliner had 181 people on board: 175 passengers (173 South Korean nationals, two from Thailand) and six crew members, two of whom survived. The bodies of all 179 dead have been recovered.
South Korean authorities have retrieved the black boxes from the plane. A flight recorder and a sound recording device have been recovered. The country has declared seven days of national mourning in connection with the crash.
