Mikhail Kavelashvili assumed the office of the President of Georgia

The inauguration ceremony of Georgia's new President Mikhail Kavelashvili took place on December 29. He took the oath of office and took office.
Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said that Kavelashvili would assume his duties at the country's presidential residence despite the refusal of the previous Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to leave it.
Zurabishvili left the presidential residence and came out to the gathered supporters whom she promised to tell about her plans. She said she would fight for new parliamentary elections. The former President of Georgia still does not recognize the new leader of the country. She called the inauguration ceremony a "travesty".
"I am leaving the residence and taking legitimacy with me. Where there is no people, there is no legitimacy. I will come out to you and be with you," Zurabishvili said at a briefing in front of gathered supporters.
In addition, according to Zurabishvili, she has received many offers from other countries and intends to visit them. The former Georgian president plans to spend the New Year on Rustaveli Avenue, taking part in a protest on December 31.
On December 14, the country also held presidential elections, which were won by Georgian Dream candidate Kavelashvili.
The incumbent president, Salome Zurabishvili, did not recognize the results and refused to leave office despite completing her term on December 29. On December 22, she threatened to "overthrow the regime" if a compromise on the parliamentary elections was not reached.
