The first regiment of the Russian Armed Forces (AF) with the S-500 Prometheus surface-to-air missile system (SAM) is threatening NATO's most important aircraft. This was reported by Military Watch Magazine (MWM) on December 28.

The article specifies that the formation of the first regiment with the new systems was an important step in ensuring Russia's defense against threats in outer space.

"The Russian Armed Forces have formed their first regiment equipped with S-500 long-range SAMs. <...> Due to its very long engagement range, the system poses a serious threat to <...> refuelers and long-range radar detection and control aircraft, which are of vital importance to <...> NATO's air force," the magazine informed.

The launchers for the S-500 system are reportedly capable of engaging targets at a distance greater than the S-400 and rival U.S. THAAD and Patriot systems. In addition, the Russian SAM system can fight satellites, space shuttles and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

"The combination of these capabilities with a high level of mobility makes the system completely unique worldwide," the article noted.

Earlier, on May 21, the US recognized the ability of the S-500 SAM system to destroy the West's most sophisticated weapons. It is noted that if Russia adds the weapon to its arsenal, it could turn the tide of the conflict in Ukraine and provide Russian forces with a noticeable advantage.

In February, Izvestiya's sources in the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian Armed Forces had tested the S-500 Prometheus SAM system. Their ability to shoot down hypersonic targets was tested. The system proved its ability to hit hypersonic targets.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
