A doctor has spoken out about the risks of mixing alcohol with medication

Alcoholic beverages are not recommended for use with most medicines. Ethanol can enhance the effect of the drug and cause a variety of side effects, as well as change its action or reduce the success of therapy. Olga Ulankina, candidate of medical sciences, expert physician at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia on December 31 about the dangers of mixing alcohol with medications.
"It is possible to predict the result depending on the group of drugs. For example, antibiotics cephalosporins prevent the excretion of alcohol from the body, because of which acetaldehyde (a breakdown product of ethanol) accumulates in the blood. A person can feel the symptoms of poisoning," Ulankina explained.
According to her, antibiotics and alcohol even separately have a negative effect on the liver, and in combination they have a depressing effect. Antiviral drugs with alcohol are also not combined: together they seriously affect the liver and pancreas. Alcohol not only neutralizes the effect of drugs, but also exacerbates the course of the disease. The temperature rises, nausea and abdominal pain appear.
In addition, most remedies for allergies to take together with alcoholic beverages is strongly discouraged. Their side effect is drowsiness. In combination with alcohol, it can intensify and lead to confusion and coordination disorders. Spasmolytics and myorelaxants in combination with alcohol can provoke the appearance of side effects: diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness.
"The consequences of taking medications together with alcohol also depend on the individual characteristics of the body. In some cases, even a small portion of alcohol can increase the effect of the drug and lead to severe reactions and even death," - summarized Ulankina.
Earlier, on December 26, fitness trainer DDX Fitness, nutritionist Artem Opalnitsky told "Izvestia" about how to reduce the calorie content of familiar salads, and also explained what is better to add to the holiday dinner, and what should be refrained from. According to him, you can reduce the calorie content of Olivier by replacing mayonnaise. It contains about 600 kcal per 100 g.
