Russian Embassy in Slovakia outraged by desecration of monument to Soviet soldiers

The Russian Embassy in Slovakia is deeply outraged by yet another act of vandalism against the Soviet Army Memorial in the city of Kosice, the diplomatic mission said on December 28.
"This sacrilegious crime was committed under the cover of night on Christmas Day on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city from Nazi occupation. Modern followers of Hitler - Tiso - Salas - Bandera cowardly take revenge in this way on the soldiers of the victorious Red Army, who gave their lives for the freedom of the Slovak people and rested in Slovak soil," the embassy's Telegram channel said.
The diplomats emphasized that the responsibility for the desecration of the monument lies with Russophobic figures who foment an atmosphere of hatred and campaign against Soviet war memorials in European countries. The embassy expressed hope that Slovak society would give a proper response to this dangerous trend.
The diplomatic mission assumes that the Slovak authorities will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident, the perpetrators will be punished, and the monument on the grave of the Red Army soldiers will be restored as soon as possible.
The defacement of the monument in Košice, which commemorates the losses of the Red Army in World War II, became known the day before. It had recently been restored for €14,000, and about five weeks later the emblems of the sickle and hammer were targeted by vandals. On Christmas Day, local activist Lubosz Lorenc shared a video of an unidentified man destroying several symbols.
