Lavrov pointed to the detrimental role of the U.S. in the Syrian crisis

The crisis in Syria has unfolded against the backdrop of the dissatisfaction of the country's citizens with the quality of living standards. The United States also played its role in aggravating the situation. This was pointed out by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on December 30.
"It is too early to draw far-reaching conclusions about the events taking place there. However, we can already say that one of the reasons for the degradation of the situation was the inability of the former leadership to meet the basic needs of the population in the conditions of the protracted civil conflict," he told TASS.
Thus, the diplomat noted, the Syrians' expectations that their lives would change for the better did not materialize even after the successes in the fight against international terrorism, in which Russia also took part. The fact that the US has effectively occupied Syria's most resource-rich northeastern region and is exerting strong sanctions pressure on Damascus has also had an impact on the situation in the region.
"In this situation, the [Syrian] authorities were forced to take unpopular measures, in particular, reducing or canceling subsidies for socially important goods and services. Protest sentiments were growing in society, and the level of support for the government by citizens was steadily decreasing," Lavrov explained.
He added that the Russian Federation rendered various kinds of assistance to the friendly people of Syria and the country's authorities, but despite this, local politicians failed to build a dialogue with opponents and regional neighbors.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
Then, on December 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after talks with the opposition, resigned as head of state and left the country, instructing a peaceful transfer of power.
On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria said it was working on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.
Against this backdrop, the IDF announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of communities in the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.
