Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed international cooperation in the Caspian region at a meeting of the Security Council on December 28.

The head of state held the meeting with permanent members of the Security Council via video link.

The meeting also discussed issues of work with Russia's closest allies.

Earlier, on December 2, Putin promised to do everything possible to prevent shallowing of the Caspian Sea at the Congress of Young Scientists. He emphasized that he had already discussed this problem with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Kazakh leader Kasym-Jomart Tokayev. According to Putin, he agreed with the Azerbaijani side on joint work in this direction. In addition, the Russian president instructed the Russian government to implement a number of preventive actions.

Before that, on November 27, deputy director of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. Pyotr Zavyalov said that a drop in the level of the Caspian Sea below the critical level could lead to a reduction in the delta of rivers flowing into it, including the Volga and the Ural. According to the scientist, the decline in the average level of the Caspian Sea has been observed since the mid-1990s. Now it is at -28.7 meters - one of the lowest values in the history of observations.
