All areas of pollution in the Kerch Strait identified after the tanker crash have been cleaned up. This was reported by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation on Saturday, December 28.
"As of today, all identified areas of pollution in the water area have been cleaned, no repeated pollution has been detected. At the same time, specialists continue to conduct round-the-clock environmental monitoring of the sea surface, including analyzing satellite images," the ministry said in a statement in its Telegram channel.
The ministry noted that over the past day fuel oil stains were found and removed manually in the area of the river Anapka. Additional booms were installed to prevent oil products from entering the river mouth. Specialists, rescuers and volunteers jointly continue cleaning the beach.
In addition to the beach cleanup, Novorossiysk tested new oil pumping equipment, which is planned to be delivered to the site of the tanker wreck. The weather made it possible to resume seabed surveys and examination of the wreck by divers.
The tankers Volgoneft-212 andVolgoneft-239crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15 due to bad weather. The incident resulted in a spill of oil products. 27 people were evacuated from both vessels. It was specified that one person died.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin created a working group to coordinate the work to eliminate the consequences of the accident with tankers in the Kerch Strait.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the situation with the elimination of the consequences of the fuel spill in the Black Sea is under the attention of the Russian President. He called the incident an environmental disaster and noted that additional resources would be needed to eliminate the consequences.
