Russian President Vladimir Putin signed on Saturday, December 28, a law on life imprisonment for armed rebellion. The corresponding document was published on the official portal of legal acts.

According to the decree, a term of imprisonment from 15 to 20 years is provided for the said act. If the mutiny resulted in the death of a person or other grave consequences, the punishment may range from 15 to 20 years of imprisonment with an additional fine of Br500 thousand to Br1 million or life imprisonment.

Also, a participant in an armed rebellion can avoid criminal liability if he voluntarily and on time reported to the authorities or helped in "preventing further damage to the interests of the Russian Federation". It is important that his actions do not contain signs of another crime.

Earlier, on December 17, the State Duma adopted in the second and third readings an amendment on the impossibility of parole for those serving life sentences for terrorist acts and armed rebellion.
