Grandmaster Nepomnyashchy was fined $200 for violating the dress code

Russian chess player Jan Nepomnyashchy was fined $200 because of inappropriate dress code at the World Blitz and Rapid Championships, which was held in New York. This was reported by the grandmaster in social network X on December 27.
"As I was just told by the chief arbiter, none other than Ahmed Adli, a chess player should not dress like that. So the $200 fine (I hope) will go to the fashion research fund in chess," Nepomnyashchy wrote under a post with his photo from the championship.
The Russian grandmaster is famous for his unorthodox appearance at chess competitions. At the 2022 World Blitz and Rapid Championship, he came to the game wearing a T-shirt with a quote from Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi. The jersey read in Spanish, "What are you looking at, asshole? Get out of here." The chess player was asked to change his shirt to a classic shirt.
Earlier, on December 12, it became known that grandmaster from India Dommaraju Gukesh became the 18th world chess champion, defeating in Singapore rival from China Ding Lizhen. The chess players played a total of 14 games over two weeks. As a result, Gukesh won 7.5:6.5.
At the end of April, Gukesh won the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto and won the right to play against Lizhen, the reigning world champion at the time. In the last round, the Indian drew with Hikaru Nakamura, who was playing for the United States, and secured his victory with 9 points. Gukesh was 17 years old at the time.
