The strongest earthquake in the history of observations was recorded in Helsinki on Christmas Day. About it on Friday, December 27, reports the TV company Yle.

"Seismologist of the University of Helsinki Toni Veikkolainen says that the earthquake on Christmas Day had a magnitude of 1.1 <...> It was the strongest earthquake in the history of measurements in Helsinki," - stated in the material.

The exact cause of the earthquake is not determined. The epicenter of seismic activity was located in Käpylä-Olimpiakylä, near the intersection of Mäkelänkatu and Koskelantie.

According to Veikkolainen, natural earthquakes in Finland are caused, for example, by the expansion of the Atlantic Ocean, land uplift and localized water mass movements in the rocks.

Earlier, on December 24, deputy director for engineering seismology and seismic hazard assessment at the Schmidt Institute of Earth Physics. O.Y. Schmidt RAS Ruben Tatevosyan did not rule out the likelihood of an earthquake on New Year's Eve in Moscow. He noted that such tremors have been known for a long time and added that the strongest of them occurred in 1802, 1838, 1940 and 1977.
