Red caviar is a traditional dish for Russians on the New Year's table. However, it is important to know that its excessive consumption can lead to health problems, warned Oksana Mikhaleva, endocrinologist, candidate of medical sciences, nutritionist at SM-Clinica, in a conversation with Izvestia on December 29.

She noted that red caviar is rich in complete proteins, easily digested by the body, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, thanks to which it is useful for the heart and blood vessels. However, its consumption should be limited to 20-25 g per day. Otherwise, there is a risk of problems with the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) and other organs.

"Despite the benefits of this product, it is quite caloric, so if you overeat it, weight gain is possible. In addition, it is rich in salt (about 3 g of salt per 100 g), so with its excessive consumption it is possible to increase blood pressure and, as a consequence, other health problems. In addition, red caviar contains a lot of cholesterol," warned Mikhaleva.

Speaking about the caloric content of red caviar, she pointed out that it is often served in the form of sandwiches with bread and butter, which significantly increases the caloric content of such an appetizer. To make such sandwiches more healthy, the doctor recommends using whole-grain bread and replacing butter with avocado.

In addition, according to the nutritionist, some people may have allergic reactions to red caviar.

"It is also worth remembering the caloric content of other products. For example, one sandwich with red caviar contains about 280 kcal, a portion of olivier salad - 300 kcal, and baked meat with cheese and mayonnaise - about 450 kcal. If you eat several New Year's dishes at one meal, for example, five sandwiches with caviar, olivier and baked meat, the total caloric content can exceed 3000 kcal, which greatly overloads the body. Because of this, such unpleasant symptoms as heaviness in the stomach, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea and even edema may occur," the specialist added.

The doctor recommended not to exceed the daily intake of this product (20-25 g), as well as not to eat caviar every day.

Earlier, December 17, it was reported that Russians for the incomplete 2024, from January to November, bought more than 5 million kg of red caviar. This is 12% more in volume compared to the same period in 2023. This is stated in the results of the research of the loyalty program "X5 Club". At the same time, the volume of purchased black caviar decreased by 16%, to 99 thousand kg.
