Insurers named the most frequent New Year's Eve emergencies

The New Year's holidays are marked by numerous small and large accidents that happen due to carelessness. "AlfaStrakhovanie" analyzed the claims on accident policies for three years and found out what Russians most often face when celebrating the New Year. The results were reviewed by Izvestia on December 28.
The most common injuries suffered by Russians during New Year celebrations are fractures of limbs. In total, during the New Year celebrations, more than 37% of appeals related to fractures of arms and legs were recorded. Most often Russians are injured as a result of falling in the street, as well as skating, sledding and skiing. About 3% are injured at home. For example, several cases of falling down the stairs during the installation of the Christmas tree and interior decoration were recorded, the analysts specified.
More than 20% of appeals during the New Year holidays are related to poisoning. Mushrooms and home canned food turned out to be among the most dangerous on the holiday table for 8% of customers. In 2% of the appeals were caused by excessive consumption of heavy food, which caused digestive disorders, the company said.
At the same time, 11% of those who applied for compensation under accident insurance policies during New Year holidays became victims of pyrotechnics. The most popular injury is burned fingers (39%), as well as eye injuries (18%). Single cases involve more severe injuries such as amputation of fingers or partial hearing loss due to close sound impact.
Almost 6% of referrals are related to injuries sustained from cooking for the New Year's Eve table. Most of them are cuts while opening cans and cutting food. In second place are burns sustained while cooking hot food. Allergic reactions caused by eating dishes from the New Year's table account for about 3% of the accidents.
Experts said that there were also cases of varying degrees of absurdity. For example, several claims were received due to splashes and corks from champagne, tangerine juice and fat from hot dishes getting into the eyes. One of the insured was injured on New Year's Eve when he was breaking branches to make hands for a snowman. 2% of Russians suffered from beatings while welcoming the New Year.
"New Year holidays are a time of fun, but we should not forget that it is during this period that many unexpected incidents occur. It is important to remember that even the most festive moments can turn out to be unpleasant surprises," said Denis Titov, director of the department of property insurance of individuals "AlfaStrakhovanie".
Earlier, on December 7, World Vision chief ophthalmologist Zarina Kurachinova gave some advice on protection from pyrotechnics. According to her, fireworks should not be launched in windy weather, so that sparks do not get into the eyes. It is always necessary to keep a safe distance from pyrotechnic devices - at least 20-30 meters.
