NATO to increase military presence in the Baltic due to cable incident


NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Friday, December 27, that the North Atlantic Alliance will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea due to the disruption of submarine cables.
"Had a conversation with Finnish leader Alexander Stubb about the Finnish investigation into possible sabotage of submarine cables. I expressed full solidarity and support with him. NATO will strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea," he wrote on his X page (former Twitter).
Earlier, on December 25, the Estonian electricity and gas network operator Elering reported that there was an emergency disconnection of the EstLink 2 DC cable between Estonia and Finland. It was noted that the cause of the emergency outage was not known. Until the end of Thursday, December 26, Elering will use available reserve capacity in the region.
Later, on December 26, it became known that the outage affected three more submarine cables between Finland and Estonia. It was specified that two cables belonging to Elisa Group were severed and another cable of CITIC Telecom was damaged.
