The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) reported on December 27 that the methodology for calculating the exchange index for sugar has been approved.

"This will allow to make more transparent the formation of price indicator for this commodity," - explained there.

The service specified that this year the Central Federal District (CFD) accounted for 57% of total sugar production. Such data were presented at the meeting of the subcommittee of the Exchange Committee for the development of organized trading in agricultural products, which includes representatives of authorities and specialized unions, as well as market participants.

For representative determination of the price indicator for sugar, the joint-stock company "National Commodity Exchange" has developed a draft methodology for calculation of the exchange index in CFD. The Subcommittee approved the submitted methodology. As explained in FAS, its application will allow to form a territorial indicator, which can be used by market participants in planning their activities, as well as by authorities in making regulatory decisions.

The service also said that since the launch of sugar trading in 2020, their volume has increased almost fivefold and in 2024 amounted to about 300 thousand tons.

Earlier, on June 29, Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov appealed to the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Anton Alikhanov with a request to introduce sugar labeling in products. In his opinion, the labeling should be clearly visible and occupy at least 25% of the front side of the product packaging.
