New Russian drug for prostate cancer treatment registered

A registration certificate has been obtained for the import-substituted radiopharmaceutical "Racurs (223Ra)" for the treatment of prostate cancer, which was developed on the basis of domestic raw materials. This was reported by the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of the Russian Federation on December 27.

"Racurs is a double-action drug. First, it destroys metastases in the bones, giving a man diagnosed with prostate cancer the opportunity to prolong life against the background of the disease. <...> Secondly, radium-223 affects the pain syndrome and makes it possible to refuse the use of analgesic drug therapy," the agency said in a statement published in its Telegram channel.

The agency noted that Racurs selectively accumulates in bones, including bone metastases. Such treatment leads to a highly localized antitumor effect. And the refusal of potent painkillers significantly improves the patient's quality of life.

It also said that the drug has great prospects for expanding the indications for the treatment of metastatic bone lesions in other localizations of the tumor process.

"Registration of the domestic drug will reduce logistical delays and increase the availability of this treatment methodology for citizens of the Russian Federation," the FMBA added.
