Biologists have spotted eight species of rare animals in Moscow in 2024

Biologists in Moscow in 2024 noticed eight species of red-listed animals in natural areas of the city. This was reported on Friday, December 27 by Azamat Kunafin, head of the biodiversity monitoring department of the capital's Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection.
It is noted that the spotted animal species are listed in the Red Book of Moscow under the zero category of rarity as probably extinct. Kunafin noted that this indicates an improvement in the ecological situation and successful work in the field of urban nature conservation, reports the agency of city news "Moscow".
Among the spotted animals are green woodpecker, wedge-tailed woodpecker, black kite, field harrier, common sedge, gray heron, golden-stemmed beetle and Laodicea perlamurica.
On December 26, employees of the Border Department of the Federal Security Service in Chita stopped the trafficking of illegally caught wild birds, which are listed in the Red Book of Russia. Law enforcers caught two drivers who were transporting birds. In the car, three specimens of saker falcon and gyrfalcon were lying on the back seats. They were wrapped in cloth, bandaged paws, wings and beaks, reports 360.ru. Ornithologists reported that the condition of rare birds is satisfactory. The birds were placed in a local nursery. A criminal case has been initiated.
In October, a red-listed bison was delivered to the branch of the Moscow Zoo in Veliky Ustyug from Minsk. The five-year-old male named Basalt arrived under the program of the Union of Zoos and Aquariums of Russia, RT writes. There are only 6-7 thousand bison left in the whole world.
In September, customs officers at Sheremetyevo airport sheltered two red-billed gyrfalcons abandoned in the air harbor and took care of the birds for several days, writes NSN.
