Natural Christmas trees are more environmentally friendly than plastic ones. Ivan Sovetnikov, head of the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz), told Izvestia in an interview.

This year the tenants of forest plots in the country have harvested over 200 thousand trees, said the head of Rosleskhoz. Most of all harvested in the Volga, Siberian and North-Western federal districts.

"Of course, we believe that natural Christmas trees are more environmentally friendly than plastic ones. The spruce is the most mass-produced Christmas tree in Russia. It has the most pleasant pine odor. But someone prefers fir or other species," he said.

It is best to go to a New Year's market for a New Year's tree, Ivan Sovetnikov emphasized, as illegal cutting is punishable by a fine with confiscation.
