The last weekend of 2024 is rich not only in New Year's movies at the box office, but also in fresh releases of various genres. Yuri Kolokolnikov will appear before the audience in a week as the Tin Woodsman, but in the meantime he is swinging a katana in the desert in the post-apocalyptic action film The Last Ronin. No less hooligan turned out to be a biopic about singer Robbie Williams. Neapolitan sun awaits all fans of Paolo Sorrentino's work in his new drama "Partenope", and for young viewers - the new adventures of Ivan-Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf, as well as a charming almanac "New Year's stories of animals".

"To Be Better: The Robbie Williams Story" 18+

Directed by: Michael Gracey

Starring Robbie Williams, Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Alisson Stadman

Former member of British music group Take That and successful solo singer Robbie Williams revealed in an interview that he feels like a trained monkey and "a little less evolved" than his peers. Director Michael Gracey, known primarily as the director of the musical The Greatest Showman, working on a biopic about Williams, took the phrase too seriously. In his new movie, the musician really appeared in the image of a computer-generated chimpanzee. It's no coincidence that the studio that worked on the Planet of the Apes franchise is responsible for the visual effects. The stunt worked. Critics note that "Being Better" lacks the formulaic nature of many biopics, especially musical ones.

Williams, who took an active part in the creation of the movie, literally dehumanizes himself in front of the camera: in the plot of a difficult relationship with his father, clinical depression, alcoholism, drugs and leaving Take That, which will eventually determine his path as a solo performer. "Being Better" is a spectacular story, what's worth the technically challenging scene alone under Rock DJ, set right on London's busy Regent Street.

"The Last Ronin" 18+

Directed by: Max Shishkin

Starring: Yuri Kolokolnikov, Diana Enakaeva, Daniil Vorobiev, Tikhon Zhiznevsky

The debut movie of Max Shishkin - clipmaker and cinephile - has reached wide screens. "The Last Ronin" is a thrash comedy, B-movie, masquerading as a post-apocalyptic action movie in the spirit of "Mad Max". Ronin is the hero of Yuri Kolokolnikov, who travels the scorched wastelands with a katana to find and avenge his father's killers. In parallel, he agrees to accompany a teenage girl, Maria, which revives the trope from "Logan" in the viewer's memory.

"The Last Ronin" as a whole resembles a collection of references and references to "The Terminator," "The Good, the Bad, the Evil," the already mentioned "Mad Max," and many others that will pop up in the minds of viewers. Along with that, it's a pretty stylish movie with quality camerawork, well staged fights and music.

"Partenope" 18+

Directed by Paolo Sorrentino

Starring: Celeste Dalla Porta, Gary Oldman, Stefania Sandrelli, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri.

"Partenope" is the celebrated Italian director's first full-length feature in three years. This is a decade-spanning drama about a young woman named after a mythical nymph and born in the eternally sunny Naples - the hometown of Paolo Sorrentino. The director makes no secret of the fact that "Partenope" is an exquisite treatise on beauty (vain in places) in cinema and a personification of the city itself.

Actress Celeste Dalla Porta essentially plays a nymph, a woman of such stunning beauty that people swoon at the sight of her. And this charm is almost devastating: no one takes the girl seriously. More than anything else, Partenope, who at first dreamed of becoming an academic anthropologist, is afraid of being seen as empty. That's exactly what cameraman Daria D'Antonio's camera shows her to be at first. And for this misogyny Sorrentino has already received a portion from the press. Many critics cursed the movie and accused of voyeurism, but in many authoritative tops "Partenope" on the first places.

"Ivan-Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf 6" 6+

Directed by: Darina Schmidt, Konstantin Feoktistov

In the main roles: Nikita Efremov, Alexander Boyarsky, Tatiana Bunina, Mikhail Boyarsky, Konstantin Bronzit, Alice Boyarskaya.

This year's animated film "Three Bounties and the Poop of the Earth", which the film company STV and studio "Melnitsa" released on the eve of last New Year's holidays, earned just over 1 billion at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in the history of Russia. This year's post took their other equally successful franchise. Experts position the new "Ivan the Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf" as the main novelty of the final weekend of 2024.

In the sixth installment, Ivan and his friends Grey Wolf and Vasilisa go to "Fairy Tale Expo" - an exhibition of wonders and amusements of interregnum level, which at one point turns into a multiverse of madness, with which we are familiar from blockbusters from Marvel. There's Kolobok, the genie from the magic lamp, and the wish-fulfilling Shchuka. The latter is kidnapped by an evil wizard, so Ivan and his company will not be bored for long. At stake is the fate of the Tridevyatoe kingdom.

"New Year stories of animals" 0+

Directed by Kamil Almeras, Ceylan Beyoglu, Natalia Chernysheva, Haruna Kisi, Carolyn Attia Larivière, Olesya Shchukina

An almanac of five tales about the amazing adventures of animals on Christmas Eve around the world premiered at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy.
