Outages affect three more submarine cables between Finland and Estonia

After the emergency shutdown of the EstLink 2 DC cable, three more submarine cables between Finland and Estonia, running in the Gulf of Finland, were affected by the outage. This is reported on December 26 by Estonian TV company ERR, referring to the statement of the owners of the cables - network companies Elisa Eesti AS and CITIC Telecom CPC.
It is noted that two cables belonging to Elisa Group were severed, and another cable of CITIC Telecom was damaged. The cause of the incident cannot be determined yet, but the owners of the cable networks are actively working to put them back into operation.
The telecommunication companies said that the disruptions had no noticeable impact on users. However, the Estonian government will still convene an emergency meeting about the emergency.
"Estonia's external connections have multiple redundancy - in the event of damage to submarine cables, alternative operational sea cables or land lines passing through Latvia can be used. This guarantees stable cross-border internet connections and uninterrupted operation of various services," the Postimees newspaper pointed out, citing a statement from the Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Department (TTJA).
Earlier, on December 25, Estonian electricity and gas network operator Elering reported that the EstLink 2 DC cable between Estonia and Finland had suffered an emergency disconnection. It was noted, the cause of the emergency outage is unknown. By the end of Thursday, December 26, Elering will use the available backup capacity in the region.
