- Political analyst points to U.S. reluctance for Poroshenko's return to the presidency of Ukraine

The USA remembers what former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's last term was like and does not want to see him in the Kiev leadership again. Poroshenko also realizes that he will not regain the post of the head of state, which is why he opposes presidential elections in the country. Political scientist Oleksandr Dudchak shared this opinion with Izvestia on December 26.
The day before, Poroshenko told journalists that Ukraine could be lost in the event of a near-term election. In his opinion, in such a case, "certain short-sighted politicians" may break through to power.
"Suddenly he decided that the elections could do harm. Clearly, all his comments are a manifestation of his own goals, the tasks he sets for himself. <...> He, of course, would not mind participating [in the presidential election] if he had a chance, but it seems that he understands the prospects perfectly well - the new American administration does not want to see him as the manager of the concentration camp Ukraine," Dudchak commented.
According to him, Poroshenko makes such statements because he is satisfied with the post of president of Ukraine already illegitimate Volodymyr Zelensky, whose powers expired in May. Thus, the expert believes that the probability of a change of the head of state in Ukraine is high, but there is a chance that the election will be staged.
Earlier, on December 22, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Artem Dmytruk, said that most Ukrainians would vote against President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and choose a politician who supports peace with Russia.
Before that, on November 11, the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that Washington was considering holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2025 amid continuing hostilities with Russia.
According to the provisions of the Ukrainian constitution, Zelensky's presidential term ended on May 20. Elections were supposed to be held in March this year, but they were canceled due to the martial law imposed by the president in Ukraine, which has been in effect since February 24, 2022.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 17 May that the issue of the legitimacy of the president should be resolved within the Ukrainian state, while the issue of the legality of the Ukrainian political leader in office remains important for Russia.
