In the Krasnodar region, the release of fuel oil, which leaked after the crash of two tankers in the Kerch Strait, has been reduced on the coast. This was reported by Kuban Governor Veniamin Kondratiev on December 26, reporting on the situation to the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov, who arrived in the region.

"The emission of petroleum products has decreased. The reduction is significant compared to two or three days earlier," Kurenkov said, his words quoted by TASS.

The governor said that the coast has to be re-inspected because the sea is opening up its new layers and the shore becomes like a cake. The outflow opens new spots of fuel oil and there is an opportunity to remove it.

Kondratiev noted that the line of coastal pollution is about 55 kilometers long, but it is discontinuous. Now the system of detection and cleaning of oil products has been set up. As of this day, more than 30 thousand tons of polluted soil have been collected. The Governor asked Kurenkov to consider the possibility of involving federal resources in cleaning up this sand, because regional activities will take quite a long time for this work without additional help.

The tankers Volgoneft-212 andVolgoneft-239crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15 due to bad weather. As a result of the incident there was a spill of oil products. 27 people were evacuated from both vessels. It was specified that one person died.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, created a working group to coordinate work to eliminate the consequences of the accident with tankers in the Kerch Strait.

Later in the Krasnodar region introduced a regional emergency regime due to the release of oil products. It was reported that thousands of liquidators, which includes both employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and volunteers, surveyed more than 256 square kilometers of water area, collected 25 tons of oil-water sweepings and treated 27.9 thousand square meters with sorbent. On December 26, the head of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, said that the fuel oil spill would result in a federal emergency regime.
