Russian Armed Forces liberate the village of Gigant in the DNR

The Russian Armed Forces (AF) have taken control of the village of Gigant in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on December 26.

"As a result of active actions of units of the Southern group of troops, the settlement of Gigant in the Donetsk People's Republic has been liberated," the ministry said in a statement.

In addition, the units of the group defeated the formations of the mechanized and aeromobile brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), as well as units of two brigades of territorial defense in the areas of Seversk, Kurakhovo, Chasov Yar and Druzhkovka in the DNR. The enemy lost up to 230 troops, a vehicle, a 122-millimeter howitzer D-30 and a 105-millimeter gun M119, the Defense Ministry said.

The day before, on December 25, the Russian Armed Forces liberated the settlement of Novy Trud in the Donetsk People's Republic. Before that, on December 23, the Russian army liberated Storozhevoye in the DNR, a day before that the settlements of Lozovaya in Kharkiv region and Krasnoye in the DNR were taken under control.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
