U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, in his Christmas address on Wednesday, December 25, promised to cut Canadians' taxes in half if their country becomes the 51st U.S. state.

He also called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a "governor."

"Merry Christmas <...> to Canada's governor Justin Trudeau. His citizens' taxes are too high, but if Canada became the 51st state, their taxes would be cut by over 60%, their businesses would double in size, and they themselves would be protected like no other country in the world," he wrote on his Truth Social page.

In addition, the US president-elect wished a Merry Christmas to the "wonderful Chinese soldiers who are carefully but illegally running the Panama Canal."

Prior to that, on December 10, Trump said that Canada and Mexico could become US states. Later, on December 17, the media reported that Canada would spend $900 million to secure its border with the US.

Earlier, on December 3, Trump said during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the country could become the 51st US state if Ottawa fails to solve the problem of illegal migration and drug smuggling.

On November 26, the president-elect of the United States noted that on the day of his inauguration, January 20, 2025, he would impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian and Mexican goods if Ottawa and Mexico City failed to fundamentally change the situation with migration across the Canadian border.

Trudeau promised that he would retaliate if such economic measures were imposed, Bloomberg wrote on December 9. It was reported that the Canadian Prime Minister considered the possible sanctions unfair and destructive to the Canadian economy. The Associated Press reported that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also said that she was ready to take retaliatory measures in case of imposition of duties.
