The use of anesthetic gels that relieve the pain of teething in babies can have serious side effects. Konstantin Krylov, a pediatric dentist and orthodontist, told Gazeta.Ru.

According to the doctor, teething is often painful and is accompanied by fever, poor health, sometimes with signs similar to the symptoms of acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections, when the child has running snot, etc.

Gels created for teething applications typically include local anesthetics, he noted.

"As of today, we know absolutely for sure that in children up to about two and a half years of age, it is better not to use these preparations because they have a number of side effects. There are gels for teething of another type, which in their composition contain extracts of medicinal plants. They will be as safe as possible," Krylov warned.

At the same time gels with herbs, according to the doctor, also has a disadvantage: they do not have anesthetic effect.

"On the one hand, gels based on local anesthetics work well and anesthetize the gum, but on the other hand, often lead to various kinds of complications, ranging from mild allergic reactions in the form of redness, rash and ending with such serious consequences of use, such as Quincke's edema or anaphylactic shock," - added Krylov.

He advised parents to use cold teethers with gel inside. They should be put in the refrigerator (in no case in the freezer), slightly cooled and given to the child to chew. An analgesic in the usual pediatric dosage can also help, he added.
