The EstLink 2 direct current cable between Estonia and Finland suffered an emergency outage. This was reported by the Estonian electricity and gas grid operator Elering on December 25.

"The reliability of power supply in Estonia has been ensured. By the end of Thursday, Elering will use the reserve capacities available in the region to compensate for the electricity that was to be supplied via EstLink 2," the statement said.

At the moment, the cause of the emergency outage is unknown.

Estonian and Finnish power operators Elering and Fingrid are promptly working to eliminate the cause of the failure.

Earlier in January, the Estlink 1 submarine Finnish-Estonian power cable failed. It is noted that the failure of Estlink 1 will reduce the possibilities for electricity transmission between Finland and Estonia and may provoke a difference in electricity prices between the countries.
