A lawyer reminded about the possibility of pensioners not to pay property tax

Russian pensioners are exempt from tax on property such as housing, garages and parking spaces. This was announced on Wednesday, December 25, by Professor Vadim Vinogradov, Doctor of Law, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
"First of all, it is worth noting that pensioners are exempt from paying property tax on physical persons according to Article 407 of the Tax Code of Russia. This applies to residential houses, apartments, rooms, garages, car places and other real estate owned by a pensioner. The pensioner has the right not to pay tax only for one of the objects from each type of property," he said in a conversation with RT.
Vinogradov explained that the exemption applies only to plots up to 600 square meters, and if the object exceeds this area, the tax is charged on the remaining part.
The lawyer said that transportation tax exemptions for pensioners depend on the region, as there are none at the federal level. However, many regions provide discounts or complete exemption from tax for certain categories of citizens, including pensioners.
The professor added that pensioners can also receive a full exemption from paying utility bills or subsidies under certain conditions. For example, Heroes of Russia and the USSR are exempted from paying for housing maintenance, while participants of the Great Patriotic War and other privileged categories pay only 50% of utilities.
He clarified that without preferential status pensioners can apply for a subsidy for payment of housing and utility services, the amount of which depends on their income, family composition and regional standards. Its maximum amount is 22% of the amount, notes "Gazeta.Ru".
Earlier, on November 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the budget of the Pension and Social Insurance Fund for 2025-2027, according to which the social pension will be indexed by 14.75%. After indexation, its amount will be 15,456 rubles on April 1, 2025. In addition, insurance pensions will be increased by 7.3% on January 1, 2025.
