Analysts have warned of a new fraudulent gifting scheme

Messages from scammers offering to trace a certain "gift" through a link that leads to a phishing site have begun to arrive to Russians. Analysts at cybersecurity company Zecurion warned about this on Wednesday, December 25.
"The link leads to a phishing resource, where it is possible to pay for delivery or identity confirmation in the interests of fraudsters. As a result, criminals can obtain advanced information about the victim and his documents, install malware on the device, write off money and steal bank card data," the experts explained in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.
According to experts, users should be wary of the very fact of a gift from an unknown sender, a strange address of the page to which the link leads, the need to enter personal data, as well as payment of some kind of commission.
"Such a scheme is most effective before the New Year. Gifts, including from acquaintances who want to make a surprise, or from partners and contractors at work are widespread. As a result, the fraudsters' messages look plausible," Zecurion concluded.
Earlier in the day, Elena Maksimova, head of the department of KB-4 "Intelligent Information Security Systems" of RTU MIREA, warned that sending e-cards to loved ones via messengers during the holidays can lead to unpleasant consequences, RT reports.
Cybercriminals actively use the holiday season to spread malware and apply fraudulent schemes, 360.ru reported.
Against the background of a significant slowdown of video hosting YouTube, the number of fraudulent offers of various gas pedal services has increased, cybersecurity experts told Izvestia. Since mid-summer 2024, the number of such publications has grown from 100-150 to 300 per month and continues to increase.
