Lavrov says U.S. approves new Russian ambassador nominee

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the candidacy of the new Russian ambassador to Washington has received the approval of the United States of America(USA). He said this on December 25 on the air of the 60 Minutes program on the Rossiya-1 TV channel .

"The Americans, by the way, <...> said that they welcome the appointment of a professional who has devoted most of his career to Soviet-American, Russian-American relations," Lavrov said.

He added that the diplomat's departure date is planned taking into account the upcoming inauguration of the new U.S. President Donald Trump, which will be on January 20.

On October 5, Anatoly Antonov completed his work as Russia's ambassador to the United States. Antonov had served as Russia's ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the United States since August 21, 2017.

On October 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the resignation of Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.
