Ukraine 's most serious strategic mistake was a counterattack on Melitopol in 2023. This was reported by the Swiss newspaper NZZ on December 24.

"The most serious strategic wrong decision was made in 2023. <...> Ukraine gave in to the political expectations of its Western partners and dared to launch a counteroffensive on Melitopol and the Crimean crossings, although it did not recruit enough personnel for an even longer war," the newspaper wrote.

According to the authors, Ukraine took this step to meet the expectations of its Western partners. As a result, the counteroffensive failed, and the consequences of this mistake are still affecting the entire situation on the battlefield.

In October 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukraine's counteroffensive had failed completely. According to him, Ukraine is still preparing new offensive operations on certain parts of the front, but the Russian leadership is aware of this and reacts accordingly.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken amid an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
