A simple breakdown: what the new "transformer" smartphone offers

"Izvestia" tested a new folding smartphone Huawei Mate X6. The device, unlike many of its "folding" colleagues, does not look flimsy, and passed the domestic crash test, which not all gadgets can withstand. Flexible screen, which displays up to three working applications simultaneously, will appeal to office workers who have to solve several tasks at once. And a modern camera with several lenses can comfortably and qualitatively shoot almost everything - from the smallest objects to sporting events. Details - in the Izvestia article.
Why diamonds are the best friends of repairmen
Before the New Year holidays, Huawei Mate X6, which we test-drove, experienced a lot. Namely, a corporate party and the afterparty that followed it.
- Let me play with it," asked an acquaintance at the event. And, grabbing a new smartphone, she took off into the night with it.
The acquaintance was wearing diamond pusetas - it's important. Repair shops know firsthand how earrings and smartphone screens are "friends". After corporate parties and other events where such jewelry is worn, the number of orders in workshops usually increases due to scratched displays. The screen of the Huawei Mate X6 was not affected in any way by close contact with diamonds.
However, despite the "friendship" with earrings, Huawei Mate X6 is hardly a ladies' device. It is quite weighty - despite the acceptable dimensions, it quite noticeably pulls away the pockets of pants. If you use the functions of the device to the fullest, you will have to think about charging it often. We talked on the phone, took some photos, shot video, played on the big screen - and the charge is already 80%.
The manufacturer recommends when testing to immerse the "clamshell" in water, the temperature of which corresponds to the temperature of the device. But at the corporate party, things went a bit wrong. The girl with diamond earrings returned without the handset. As a result, the device was found in the snowdrift nearest to the restaurant. The Mate X6 falling on the tiled floor at the same catering outlet is quite a trifle.
Of course, the party was continued at home. There was a dispute between the participants about form factors: what is better - a monoblock smartphone or a folding one. The Huawei Mate X6 was thrown on the party table in a polemical heat - and continued to work as if nothing had happened (the display of a competing vendor's smartphone, which flew there, cracked). In the morning, the Mate X6 was found on the same table in a large puddle of whiskey - witnesses claim that the cocktail also contained Prosecco, aperol, some vodka and red caviar. But this is not certain.
The author many years ago has already found his cell phone of a popular brand at that time in a similar situation - and it could not be repaired. And Huawei Mate X6 only had to be wiped with a damp cloth. Neither scratches on the body, nor interruptions in operation were noticed. To break the smartphone, which costs almost 190 thousand rubles, would be extremely frustrating.
In fact, the developers of the Huawei Mate X6 have provided several options that allow the device and its owner to get dry (and intact) from water and not only. Firstly, the device is waterproof - judging by the description, it can stay for some time even fully submerged in water. Secondly, scratches on the screen are avoided thanks to a special protective glass Kunlun Glass of the second generation. Thirdly - the hinge mechanism of the device is well worked out - it doesn't loosen, doesn't dangle, folds the "clamshell" tightly. It feels like something very durable and reliable.
In addition, the back cover of Mate X6 is covered with fiberglass. For a weighty device, on which it is simply impossible to put a case, this is an important advantage - the "clamshell" does not slip in your hands when folded. At the same time, the device is very thin for gadgets of its class - in the hands and in a pants pocket it feels the same as the most ordinary smartphone.
Who and how best to shoot with Huawei Mate X6
Cameras, which are equipped with a new "clamshell", allow you to make very, very high-quality pictures even non-professional photographers. No, the camera has a "Pro" mode - with all sorts of obscure designations and numbers - but the default capabilities are enough. Live, natural color of "pictures" is transmitted much better than it was on smartphone cameras two years ago. A special color sensor, embedded in the camera unit and transmitting 1.6 million spectral channels (according to Huawei), is responsible for this. And the colors are equally well "drawn" and when shooting almost against the light, and in the twilight of a winter evening in a Moscow apartment.
Pleased with the mode of "machine gun" shooting in motion. With it is very convenient to photograph, for example, birds coming to the feeder in the park. The old DSLR in sport mode does not really pull it out, but the Mate X6 - quite well. Again, very decent pictures are obtained from the window of a fast-moving cab.
Huawei also positions the new folding device as an advanced gadget for macro photography (for it a telephoto lens with a 48-megapixel sensor, f/3.0 aperture and 4x optical zoom is responsible). What can I say - yes, small objects are very clear, again with very good color reproduction. For example, you can see all the veins on the leaves of decorative tomatoes growing on the windowsill.
Mate X6 offers photographers and videographers a lot of additional options that many other devices do not have. For example, slow-motion video capture. Or multi-exposure - it allows you to create a "trace" effect from a moving object on the photo. Built-in photo and video editors are advanced and multifunctional. Why some options are needed, the author of this test drive did not understand at all.
What good is the folding screen of the new "folding smartphone"
For a long time, folding smartphones caused bewilderment in most users. The internal flexible screen of such devices not only seemed flimsy, but also somehow incomprehensible: for a smartphone the diagonal of such a display is very large, for a tablet it is small. And, in addition, the first generation of such devices did not have any special features and applications that gave them any advantages over other devices.
With the Huawei Mate X6, this is no longer the case. Take, for example, the same photos. The screen, for example, in macro photography, you can bend 90 degrees - then its upper part, on which the cameras are located at the back, will show the picture, and the lower part will display the control panel. Convenient when you don't want to or can't take it off your hands.
A more relevant feature of the large screen that appeared in the Mate X6 is the ability to display three running applications on it at once. You can switch between them and put them in full-screen mode simply by swiping the display. Another handy feature is the ability to display one app on each of the two halves of the screen and work with them simultaneously. This is a great feature, for example, for those who sit on videoconference calls. Imagine - on one half of the screen you can see your interlocutors, follow the discussion, and at the same time on the other half you are chatting. Or playing some interesting game, if you realize that the meeting is wasted.
Another option of the large display is purely entertainment. In its promotional materials, Huawei describes the lock screen as "3D emoji". When you load it, emoji smiley faces start rolling over the desktop when you tilt the device, with a strong shake they can "get angry" at you, bounce, reacting to touching them. We were able to load this screen, and the round emoji really started rolling around the screen. But they didn't show any emotions or reactions. Probably, their time had not come yet.
