WP reported on Biden's plans to impose new sanctions against Russia's energy sector

US President Joe Biden wants to introduce new anti-Russian sanctions. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on December 24, citing anonymous sources familiar with the situation.

"Biden is considering imposing major new sanctions against the Russian energy sector in the final weeks of his time in office," the material says.

It is specified that this may be undertaken to give the new team of the US-elect Donald Trump leverage in negotiations on the Ukrainian conflict.

According to sources, the sanctions will be aimed at foreign ships that transport Russian oil and Russian oil exporters, specifies "Gazeta.Ru".

The list of restrictions includes 54 individuals and 30 organizations. Restrictions are also imposed on 52 ships, which are subject to a ban on entry to ports and a wide range of services related to maritime transport. In addition, the airline Utair was included in the 15th package of anti-Russian sanctions.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on December 18 called the EU's 15th package of anti-Russian sanctions illegal. According to the diplomat, they jeopardize global energy security.

Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbas. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
