Archaeologist from Portugal Alexander Monteiro said that found in the waters of the country hundreds of ships with treasures on board. This was reported by the publication Observador on December 23.

The scientist made a map of 8620 shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of the state since 1500. After analyzing this data, Monteiro concluded that on the bottom near the Azores, Madeira, as well as off the Portuguese mainland, there should be at least 250 ships with treasure on board.

"There are about 7,500 ships off the mainland, 1,000 off the Azores and 120 off Madeira. They got lost there," he explained.

As the archaeologist specified, he found the remains of the flagship Nossa Senhora da Luz, which sank in 1615 near the island of Faial in the Azores. Monteiro also said that in the waters off the peninsula of Troia off the mainland there is a shipwreck of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário, which sank in 1859 with 22 tons of gold and silver on board.

According to the scientist, this information was published long ago, but the Portuguese government has not yet taken any action.

In early September it was reported that a lost statue of "Diana of Versailles" 60 centimeters high was found near the wreck of the Titanic. During the expedition to the wreckage of the legendary ship more than 2 million photos were taken and new artifacts were found.
