Researchers from the French University of Notre Dame have proven that the straps of smartwatches and fitness trackers contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which have an effect on the skin. This is stated on the website of the academic institution.

According to the study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters (ES&T Letters), scientists tested 22 watch straps of different brands and price ranges purchased in the US.

"The results showed that 9 of the 22 straps tested contained elevated levels of PFAS type," the university said in the publication.

It is specified that the result was recorded in more expensive straps, the price of which exceeded $15 (about 1.5 thousand rubles).

PFAS are also called "eternal chemicals" because they do not decompose and do not disintegrate, contributing to the contamination of soil and groundwater. These substances persist in the environment for tens of years. It is specified that manufacturers use them to make products resistant to water, heat and stains.

Earlier, on November 21, the Russian Ecological Operator (REO) said that TV sets with fluorescent backlighting pose a danger to the environment. CEO of REO Denis Butsaev noted that LCD displays with CCFL backlighting - fluorescent lamp with cold cathode - pose a special danger to the environment.
