European Union (EU) states are worried about the growing movement in Europe towards Russia. The newspaper El País reported on December 24.

"The Russian president[Vladimir Putin] retains allies in the EU and is accumulating supporters among some extreme right-wing parties," the piece said.

It is specified that the countries' anxiety arose against the backdrop of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo's latest visit to Moscow. The recent visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Russia also caused anxiety.

Putin and Fitzo held talks on Sunday, December 22. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called their conversation quite thorough the next day. He shared that at the meeting they managed to discuss bilateral relations, exchange views on the Ukrainian conflict, as well as talk about energy issues.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the same day that Europe cannot exist without Russia and Belarus. According to him, sooner or later Europe will "open up" to the states. He added that relations would be established with Ukraine as well.

Before that, on December 18, Peskov said that so far nothing foreshadows a change in relations between Russia and Europe after US President-elect Donald Trump comes to power. He emphasized that Europe had lost its independence, giving it to the American side.
