Migrant children will be tested for Russian language skills in April 2025

Testing of migrant children for knowledge of the Russian language for enrollment in schools will begin on April 1, 2025. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko on December 24.

"Already from April 1 next year such work will be systematically developed in all educational institutions of our country," the Deputy Prime Minister told "RIA Novosti".

He said that Rosobrnadzor is now finalizing methodological materials, systems for testing and evaluation criteria. The government realizes that different classes will need different levels of testing.

Chernyshenko added that about 155 thousand migrant children go to Russian schools per year.

The State Duma passed the law in the second and third readings

Earlier, on December 20, the Federation Council approved a law that prohibits the admission to schools of migrant children who do not know the Russian language. First of all, the document prescribes to check the legality of the child's stay in Russia. After that, the future student must pass a test for knowledge of the Russian language in order to be eligible for enrollment in the school. This control will be carried out free of charge. The law will come into force on April 1, 2025.

The law prohibiting the enrollment in schools of migrant children who do not know the Russian language was adopted by the State Duma deputies on December 11. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the legislative initiative during the "Results of the Year" on December 19. December 19 supported the legislative initiative. The head of state drew attention to the fact that without such a measure, the question arises how to teach children who do not speak Russian.

Prior to that, on November 5, the President instructed to prepare a federal algorithm for working with the children of migrants who know Russian poorly or do not speak it at all. Putin recalled that foreign students take a language proficiency test before entering a university and noted that this test should be given a unified standard.
