The UN said it identified 63 cases of child wasting in Syria during December


Since December 2, 63 cases of wasting and 18 cases of malnutrition have been identified among children in Syria. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on December 23.
"Nutrition interventions continue across the country. Thousands of children, pregnant and lactating women have been screened across the country. Since December 2, at least 63 cases of wasting and 18 cases of malnutrition have been identified among children and referred for treatment," the official website of the organization specifies.
In addition, it is informed that the lack of fuel affects important activities. For example, in Aleppo province, six public hospitals and 60 primary health care centers work only partially due to the lack of fuel and electricity.
"We are distributing food aid, including bread, cooked rations, hot lunches and food baskets. In northwest Syria, partners have also started supporting farmers, including with cash grants," the organization added.
However, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the situation in northeastern Syria remains dire for 40,000 people in 215 emergency collective centers.
Earlier, on December 17, UN special envoy to Damascus Geir Pedersen discussed humanitarian support for Syrians with the new authorities of the state. Pedersen said the new Syrian authorities are ready to engage with "a broad humanitarian society" to rebuild the country's economy.
On December 10, the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) called for $30 million to help 700,000 people in northwestern Syria. The funds will be used over the next four months. They will be used to provide immediate and permanent assistance to the most at-risk and vulnerable populations among those who have already been displaced in northwestern Syria.
Prior to that, on December 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had resigned as head of state after talks with the opposition and left the country, instructing a peaceful transfer of power.
On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces of Syria announced the work on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.
Against this backdrop, the IDF announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of communities in the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.
The situation in Syria escalated following a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib that began on November 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
