Russian President Vladimir Putin 's meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo was a sad signal for Ukraine. This opinion was voiced by the chairman of the Federation Council's committee for international affairs, Grigory Karasin, on Monday, 23 December.

According to the senator, it shows that the European Union (EU) has already stopped demagogic support for the current regime of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired on May 20) and has moved on to concerns about its own security and its own economy.

"Fitzo's visit shows that in Slovakia these worries about its own fate, its own economy, its own role in European politics in general are now dominant. <...> The rather bold arrival here of the Slovak leader shows that national interests in the broad sense of the word are still dominant among real thinking politicians and will continue to dominate," the senator said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru, adding that this shows a very uneasy and at the same time valid line of the new mentality in Europe, which will continue to develop.

Talks between Putin and Fitzo were held in the Kremlin the previous day, December 22. Then the presidential spokesman specified that the visit of the Slovak prime minister had been planned a few days before.

After the talks, Fitzo said that his visit to Russia was a reaction to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky 's statement about the termination of gas transit through Ukrainian territory, RT reported. According to him, Putin said during the meeting that Russia was ready to supply gas to Slovakia directly after January 1, 2025.

On the same day, Slovak member of the European Parliament Luboš Blaga called Fico's visit to Moscow a slap in the face for the Ukrainian leader. He emphasized that the people of Slovakia supported Russia and did not consider this state an enemy state.

On December 23, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin and Fitzo talked about bilateral relations, which have suffered significantly due to the actions of the previous Slovak authorities, 360.ru reported. The Russian leader shared his vision of the current situation in the war zone and in terms of advancing the special military operation.
