Russians told about frequent attacks by fraudsters against elderly relatives


Every fourth member of the older generation is regularly attacked by fraudsters. This is stated in the results of a survey of the online platform Ozon, which were read by Izvestia on December 24.
"The results of the survey show that older people are not only more often attacked by scammers, but also more willing to give them substantial sums," said Ozon information security director Kirill Myakishev.
Experts found out that 75% of respondents or their relatives have encountered fraudsters. Of these, one third of respondents noted that not only they themselves, but also their relatives had encountered attackers. The remaining 44% were subjected to frauds personally, or it affected only their relatives or family members. The average age of those who became victims of swindlers was 65 years old.
Survey participants said that their parents (88%) and grandparents (50%) had been scammed. Other relatives of the older generation have been defrauded in 70% of cases, and this category has the highest percentage of those who are regularly attacked (17%).
At the same time, fraudsters managed to steal from 10% of the respondents' relatives: every third person lost more than 50 thousand rubles.
The most common types of scams encountered by respondents are phone fraud (79%), fake employees of institutions (56%), job offers or part-time work (33%). Most often, attackers tried to get money (82%) and personal data (58%).
At the same time, scammers managed to steal funds from 14% of respondents: in 82% of cases the theft did not exceed Br100 thousand. About 26% of respondents lost up to Br5 thousand, while 18% gave more than Br100 thousand to scammers.
Analysts learned that most often the attackers called by cell phone (78%), in other cases (80%) used SMS, messengers Telegram or WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are banned in Russia).
Earlier, on November 17, Evgeny Pankov, project manager of the .RU/.RF domain coordination center, told Izvestia about the observed steady growth of phishing attacks conducted via messengers, especially Telegram and WhatsApp (owned by Meta, an organization recognized as extremist in Russia). According to him, 2,374 domains imitating Telegram were blocked in Runet in the first 10 months of this year, and 1,036 domains imitating the second messenger were blocked.
