Scientists have learned about the benefits of coffee on the cognitive abilities of heart patients

Coffee can protect cognitive abilities in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial fibrillation. This was found by scientists from the University Hospital of Zurich, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JHA).

The researchers identified atrial fibrillation as the most common heart rhythm disorder. In the updated 2023 guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, the American Heart Association (AHA) stated that caffeine avoidance does not help prevent heart rhythm disorders in patients with atrial fibrillation, while caffeine may worsen its symptoms in some patients.

Atrial fibrillation is associated with the risk of dementia, said Massimo Barbagallo, lead author of the study and associate professor at the University Hospital of Zurich. In such a situation, coffee can have a compensatory effect, increasing cognitive ability.

The experiment, which involved more than 2.44 thousand people with atrial fibrillation, showed that coffee consumption is associated with better cognitive test results. Volunteers who drank more coffee had better results in information processing speed, hand-eye coordination and attention.

It is also specified that the cognitive age of patients who consumed more coffee was 6.7 years less than those who drank less. At the same time, volunteers who drank five cups of coffee a day had 20% lower levels of inflammation in the body. The results refute the established opinion about the harm of the drink for the cardiovascular system.

Earlier, on December 16, a nutritionist, endocrinologist "SM-Clinica", Candidate of Medical Sciences Oksana Mikhaleva told "Izvestia" that some people should limit or completely exclude coffee from their diet. First of all, this applies to children, pregnant women and people with high blood pressure, she specified.
