Switzerland joins EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus


Switzerland has joined the 15th package of the European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia and Belarus. This was reported on December 23 on the website of the country's government.
"The Department of Economics, Education and Research (WBF), responsible for restrictions, expanded the sanctions lists against Russia and Belarus. Thus, Switzerland has accepted the changes adopted by the EU," - stated in the publication.
It is noted that the sanctions lists of Switzerland against Russia and Belarus are identical to the European ones. The authorities specified that the changes will come into force on Tuesday, December 24.
EU foreign ministers finally approved the 15th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia on December 16.
The list of restrictions includes 54 individuals and 30 organizations. Restrictions are also imposed on 52 vessels, which are subject to a ban on entry to ports and a wide range of services related to maritime transportation. In addition, the airline Utair was included in the 15th package of anti-Russian sanctions.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on December 18 called the EU's 15th package of anti-Russian sanctions illegal. According to the diplomat, they jeopardize global energy security.
On Sunday, December 22, the newspaper Die Welt with reference to diplomats of the association reported that the EU is going to adopt a new package of anti-Russian sanctions on February 24, 2025. It is noted that the restrictions have not been agreed at the moment.
Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
