- Political analyst pointed to Trump's attempts to create an agglomeration of states around the US

US President-elect Donald Trump understands that it is more profitable to create a unified economic and logistical system of neighboring countries rather than investing in the security of Europe. This is the reason for the politician's recent statements about his readiness to take over Greenland, make Canada a new American state, and regain control over the Panama Canal, political consultant Ruslan Andreev, an expert at the Polylog Group, told Izvestia on December 23.
Earlier in the day, journalists from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) considered Trump's remarks provocative. They also noted that it was unclear whether the politician really expects to fulfill the demands.
"Trump has no need to provoke anyone today or test reactions. He is already a winner, and is going to talk to others about the interests of the United States from the side of force, and will only talk to the "strongest of the world"," commented Andreev.
Thus, he pointed out, after Trump's statements about Canada and Mexico, Panama and Greenland, in general about the return of US influence in South and Central America, the geopolitical strategy of the representative of the Republican Party looms.
"Why would Washington want to secure Europe when there is chaos going on around the White House? Europe, which itself does not pay the NATO bill for its own security (2% of GDP). Why support NATO and the Potsdam-Yalta security system if it has outlived its usefulness?" - added the interlocutor of the publication.
He stressed that migrants, drug cartels and criminals are drawn to the U.S. from the nearest neighboring countries, in which they invest multi-billion dollars. Against this background, Andreev believes, Trump envisions the creation of a kind of unified economic and logistical agglomeration of states around him, including not only Canada, Mexico, Greenland, but also all of Central America and part of South America up to Venezuela with its oil deposits.
"And this cooperative model would make it possible, on the one hand, to get rid of the pressing problems of the American voter, on the other hand, to effectively contain China and the agglomeration it is creating in the Asia-Pacific region," the expert concluded.
The day before, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, emphasized that for the United States "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician showed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. He was turned down then.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump announced that the US will demand the return of control over the Panama Canal if the terms of its use are not revised. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino said it was impossible to return the canal to US ownership.
In addition, on December 10, Trump said that Canada and Mexico could become U.S. states. After that, on December 17, the media reported that Canada will spend $900 million to secure the border with the United States.
Prior to that, on November 26, the President-elect of the United States noted that on the day of his inauguration, January 20, 2025, he would impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian and Mexican goods if Ottawa and Mexico City failed to fundamentally change the situation with migration across the Canadian border.
