The New Year's holidays are a time of fun, feasts and long-awaited gatherings with friends and family. However, since January 1, many of us will have to face the consequences of a stormy holiday. The question of how to recover after New Year's Eve night worries many, and not only those who overindulged in alcohol, but also those who experienced overeating and lack of rest. More about how to cope with the consequences, told "Izvestia" on December 24, doctor-gastroenterologist of JSC "Medicine" (clinic of Academician Roitberg), Dr. Vladimir Neronov.

"One of the common myths is the need to hangover. Many argue that a little drink in the morning to ease the hangover, not only will not hurt, but will help to regain strength. However, in reality, this can only increase the addiction to alcohol. A constant morning "hangover" is one of the signs of alcohol addiction, not a way to fight a hangover. The best way to avoid problems is to drink in moderation and always remember that alcohol is especially strong on an empty stomach," he explained.

According to him, one common tip is to eat fatty foods to avoid hangovers. However, it is important to remember that heavy and fatty meals can only aggravate the condition. In the morning, it is best to avoid excessive food, and the first thing to do is to drink plenty of water to restore water and salt balance. Light soups, compotes and drinks that help to cleanse the body are best.

"A great idea is to start the morning with a cup of green tea or black coffee without sugar. This will help you feel a little better thanks to the antioxidants. However, you should avoid coffee with milk or sugar as they can irritate the stomach," said the doctor.

Brine is a really effective remedy to restore the balance of minerals in the body, the specialist noted. It helps restore normal blood pressure, relieves dehydration and relieves dry mouth. Brine contains salts of magnesium, potassium and sodium, which are important for normalizing the functions of organs and body systems. It can be drunk in small portions throughout the day to improve health.

"If you don't have vascular problems, a contrast shower can be a good way to perk up and tone up a bit. However, excessively hot or cold temperatures can cause your blood pressure to spike, so it's important to be careful. As for physical activity, it's worth remembering that excessive exercise after the holidays can be harmful. It is better to start with walks in the fresh air. Walking, skiing or skating rink activate your metabolism, improve your mood and help you get back in shape. This is especially important after a sedentary holiday and overeating", - specified the gastroenterologist.

Neronov noted that on the day after New Year's Eve it is important to start eating with light foods, such as oatmeal on water with fruit. This not only helps to improve the digestive system, but also helps to quickly restore the water-electrolyte balance due to fructose. Throughout the day, it's important to eat small portions and avoid heavy foods, especially fast food and processed foods.

"Complex carbohydrates and fiber such as oats, quinoa, brown rice, as well as steamed vegetables, fish and chicken are helpful for stabilizing blood sugar levels. Get rid of excess salt and increase your intake of fresh vegetables," said the doctor.

As the specialist pointed out, if the New Year holidays led to extra kilograms, do not be upset. It is important to remember that sharp diets or starvation will not help, but only aggravate the situation. It is better to return to a balanced diet. Instead, focus on proper recovery: eat frequently and fractionally to maintain a normal metabolism.

"A sample menu for recovery after the holidays should include cereals, fish, vegetables, fruits and light protein foods. Replace fatty meats with chicken or fish. Gradually reduce the consumption of fast carbohydrates and sugar", - emphasized Neronov.

He drew attention to the fact that many people face reduced ability to work and fatigue. To get back to a normal working rhythm, it is recommended to prepare in advance: if you traveled on holidays, return home a couple of days before work. This will help you adapt to your work schedule and not feel very stressed.

"It is also important not to overload yourself at work in the first few days and allow yourself to rest in the evenings, keeping pleasant memories of the holidays," the doctor concluded.

In October, Neronov reported to "Izvestia" that soup also helps with a hangover. At the same time, he pointed out that mineral water, brine, tea or compote will help replenish the loss of fluids and electrolytes.
