After the victory of Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential election in the West, the ideas with which leaders approach the Ukrainian conflict have changed. This was stated by Trump advisor Mike Waltz in an interview with American journalist Ben Shapiro.

"We've seen the overall narrative shift from statements about [a willingness to help Ukraine] as much as we need to and give [it] carte blanche <...> to [thinking about] how do we get a deal. That's the Trump effect," Waltz said, an interview with him published on Shapiro's YouTube channel on December 22.

The Trump adviser emphasized that the president-elect is committed to ending the conflict, and both European and Ukrainian politicians are beginning to adapt to this. Waltz indicated that one part of his job is to understand what needs to be done to get the parties to the negotiating table.

Trump's associate pointed out that the approach of the administration of current U.S. President Joe Biden 's administration has been very dual and uncertain. First, for example, its staff was looking for a plane to evacuate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his powers expired on May 20), and then decided to support the Ukrainian army as long as it was ready to fight, but did not identify a specific target for combat operations and did not transfer weapons.

On the eve, December 22, Trump said that he was waiting for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, reports "Gazeta.Ru". The Republican added that if he were in Biden's place, he would not have allowed such a crisis at all.

At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out the next day that there are no real impulses for a meeting between the Russian leader and the Republican.

Before that, on December 13, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg admitted that with the participation of the newly elected president, the conflict could be stopped in the next few months, because the former White House chief is capable of decisive actions to resolve crises.

Peskov on November 20 drew attention to the fact that Russia does not suit the option of freezing the conflict in Ukraine, Moscow seeks to achieve its goals in special operations, which have already been repeatedly voiced. At the same time, Putin is ready for contacts and negotiations on the crisis.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
