In Yakutia found the carcass of a mammoth of unique preservation age of 50 thousand years.

In Yakutia found a carcass of a year-old mammoth of unique preservation, the geological age of which is about 50 thousand years. This was reported on December 23 in the press service of the North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU) named after M.K. Ammosov.

It is noted that the back and front parts of the mammoth were found by local residents in June this year. The carcass was in the melted layer of soil of the Batagaika crater near the village of Batagai, Verkhoyansk district in northern Yakutia.

"The mammoth cub was found by locals by accident, having discovered the front part sticking out of the soil. When thawing, the corpse of the ancient animal split into two parts. The front part thawed first, and under the weight of its weight it fell through. Rear limbs, pelvic part were still in the permafrost", - specified in the North-Eastern Federal University.

They themselves built a stretcher from improvised means to lift the carcass to the surface.

The mammoth is a female, they decided to call her Yana after the name of the river flowing near the site of the discovery. The height at the withers is 1.2 meters and the length is no more than 2 meters. The weight of the carcass is estimated at 100 kg. The preservation was called exceptional, as no losses, visible damage or deformations were found on the head of the carcass.

Scientists are going to conduct long-term studies and also hope to find whole cell nuclei for possible cloning. The press office added that the cell research will be conducted in the spring of 2025 with the participation of scientists from Korea's SOOAM biotechnology foundation.

It is very rare to find whole mammoth carcasses, this discovery is the seventh in the history of paleontology.

Earlier, August 15, The Washington Post reported that a U.S. resident from Mississippi found a mammoth tusk in a local stream. This is the first such mammoth fossil found in the state.
